Conference interpreting is most familiar from images of the United Nations. But it can take many forms.
|
Whisper interpreting
| This is generally used when only a few of the conference or meeting participants need interpreting services. The interpreter is seated very close to the group of listeners and simply whispers the interpretation to them.
|
Headsets, no booth
| The interpreter is usually positioned at the back of the room and speaks into a voice-silencing microphone which is connected to a small transmitter pack. Listeners hear the interpretation through headsets which can be tuned to any one of several channels to allow for multiple languages.
|
Headsets, full booth
| Interpreting booths may be table-top installations or full enclosures into which a table will fit. The interpreter speaks into a microphone and the listeners adjust their headsets as above.
|
Client's facilities
| For the Republican National Convention, the client built a special soundproof booth in the lower levels of the convention site. Tembua® provided 3 interpreters who handled every moment of the convention. |
Simultaneous interpreting is very demanding. In all cases, 2 interpreters are provided and alternate every 15-30 minutes. It is always helpful if prepared remarks are given to the interpreter in advance.
